Knit shirts with a band collar and a button placket were originally worn as underwear. Then English rowers in the town of Henley-on-Thames, preferring the increased ventilation, started wearing them as uniforms in their regattas-hence the name. Over the decades they remained as sportswear until the 1970’s when their popularity took off.
